I would highly recommend this as a resource for any developers who want to really dig in and solidify their working knowledge of PHP and web services, or just want to explore the nuances and complexities of XML DTDs and namespaces.

— Nathan Smith, Godbit Project

Pro PHP XML and Web Services is the authoritative guide to using the XML features of PHP 5 and PHP 6. No other book covers XML and Web Services in PHP as deeply as this title. The first four chapters introduce the core concepts of XML required for proficiency, and will bring you up to speed on the terminology and key concepts you need to proceed with the rest of the book. Next, the book explores utilizing XML and Web Services with PHP5. Topics include DOM, SimpleXML, SAX, xmlReader, XSLT, RDF, RSS, WDDX, XML-RPC, REST, SOAP, and UDDI.

Author Robert Richards, a major contributor to the PHP XML codebase, is a leading expert in the PHP community. In this book, Richards covers all topics in depth, blending theory with practical examples. Youll find case studies for the most popular web services like Amazon, Google, eBay, and Yahoo. The book also covers XML capabilities, demonstrated through informative examples, in the PEAR libraries.

About the Author
Robert Richards, currently an independent contractor, has worked in various fields including Medical Information, Telecommunications, Media and E-Learning. Having been exposed to XML since its inception and used for various projects during his career, his most extensive work with the technology was within the E-Learning space. He helped created a proprietary XML based application server which used XML for data publishing, defining application business logic as well as data querying. He was also the lead engineer for the company’s involvement in SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model), used for Web based learning, established by the Department of Defense through its Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative.
After becoming the latest casualty of the “dot-com” implosion in 2001, Rob had his first taste of PHP and began contributing code to the domxml extension in 2002. Since then he became one of the authors of the DOM extension for PHP 5, contributes to the other XML based extensions and has authored the xmlReader, for PHP 5, and xmlwriter, for PHP 4.3+, extensions. Also on occasion, he contributes bug fixes to the libxml2 project found during the development of these extensions.

PHP Solutions: Dynamic Web Design Made Easy

  • Paperback: 488 pages
  • Publisher: friends of ED (November 20, 2006)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1590597311

You want to make your websites more dynamic by adding a feedback form, creating a private area where members can upload images that are automatically resized, or perhaps storing all your content in a database. The problem is, you’re not a programmer and the thought of writing code sends a chill up your spine. Or maybe you’ve dabbled a bit in PHP and MySQL, but you can’t get past baby steps. If this describes you, then you’ve just found the right book.

PHP and the MySQL database are deservedly the most popular combination for creating dynamic websites. They’re free, easy to use, and provided by many web hosting companies in their standard packages. Unfortunately, most PHP books either expect you to be an expert already or force you to go through endless exercises of little practical value. In contrast, this book gives you real value right away through a series of practical examples that you can incorporate directly into your sites, optimizing performance and adding functionality such as file uploading, email feedback forms, image galleries, content management systems, and much more. Each solution is created with not only functionality in mind, but also visual design.

But this book doesn’t just provide a collection of ready-made scripts: each PHP Solution builds on what’s gone before, teaching you the basics of PHP and database design quickly and painlessly. By the end of the book, you’ll have the confidence to start writing your own scripts or&8212;if you prefer to leave that task to others–to adapt existing scripts to your own requirements.

Right from the start, you’re shown how easy it is to protect your sites by adopting secure coding practices. The book has been written with an eye on forward and backward compatibility–recommending the latest PHP 5 techniques, but providing alternative solutions for servers still running PHP 4.3. All database examples demonstrate how to use the original MySQL extension, MySQL Improved, or the PHP Data Objects (PDO) introduced in PHP 5.1, letting you choose the most suitable option for your setup.

It hasn’t taken Web developers long to discover that when it comes to creating dynamic, database-driven Web sites, MySQL and PHP provide a winning open source combination. Add this book to the mix, and there’s no limit to the powerful, interactive Web sites that developers can create. With step-by-step instructions, complete scripts, and expert tips to guide readers, veteran author and database designer Larry Ullman gets right down to business: After grounding readers with separate discussions of first the scripting language (PHP) and then the database program (MySQL), he goes on to cover security, sessions and cookies, and using additional Web tools, with several sections devoted to creating sample applications. This guide is indispensable for intermediate- to advanced level Web designers who want to replace their static sites with something dynamic. In this edition, the bulk of the new material covers the latest versions of both technologies: PHP 6 (due out in 2008) and MySQL 5 (available now). The book’s publication date is likely to beat the official release of PHP 6, making it one of the first books available on the subject.

Distributed Applications - Integrating Xml Web Services And .Net Remoting

  • Name: “Distributed Applications - Integrating Xml Web Services And .Net Remoting”

  • Pages: 752 pages

  • Type: CHM

  • Size: 5 MB

Make the jump to distributed application programming using the .NET Framework—and introduce a new level of performance, scalability, and security to your network and enterprise applications. Expert .NET developer Matthew MacDonald shares proven techniques for fully exploiting .NET Remoting, XML Web services, and other .NET technologies and integrating them into your real-world solutions. MacDonald digs into key .NET building blocks and architectural issues, explaining which features and designs will best serve your customized distributed application projects—and when to use them. Case studies with full code examples illustrate these practical techniques in action, as well as demonstrating their benefits and tradeoffs.

It’s been roughly seven years since distributed application architecture first gained recognition in the business world. Back then, exciting new technologies such as COM/DCOM and CORBA/IIOP promised to revolutionize the way that large-scale, resource-intensive applications were built. Instead of trying to host a single monolithic application on a single computer, distributed architecture allowed software to be modeled as a group of objects communicating across different machines. Best of all, these machines no longer needed to be proprietary mainframes—instead, developers could use inexpensive servers running the MS Windows operating system. Increasing the overall throughput of the system was often as easy as just adding an extra computer to the mix.

All this has made distributed programming one of the most exciting and hotly pursued areas of software programming, but it hasn’t made up for some critical stumbling blocks. Quite simply, distributed applications are complicated. Programming a distributed application on the Windows platform requires a solid understanding of MS’s COM standard, its enterprise software and component services (such as SQL Server and COM+), and a healthy dose of painfully won experience. And no matter how skilled the programmer, a distributed programming project can quickly mushroom into a collection of versioning nightmares, interoperability headaches, and unexpected performance bottlenecks.

These problems are the key factors behind the creation of MS’s .NET platform. MS .NET provides an entirely new model for creating components, communicating across computers, and accessing data—one that is optimized for distributed applications on every level. This framework still requires a healthy investment of developer time and a fairly steep learning curve for novice programmers. After the basics are mastered, however, .NET makes it dramatically easier to create truly scalable software systems.

This book explores distributed programming with .NET. It details the key .NET technologies you need to master and explains the best practices for distributed application architecture with .NET. Best of all, it shows you how the separate .NET technologies can all fit together.
